FAQ
How to long to homemade breadcrumbs last?
Keeping them in an airtight container in a dry dark place will allow them to last up to 3 months. If they are kept in an airtight container in the freezer, they can last up to 6 months.
What kind of bread is best?
The best bread is homemade bread since you know where all the ingredients came from. Using homemade sourdough bread adds a delicious slight sour taste to whatever you use the breadcrumbs for.
How should I store homemade breadcrumbs?
I like to store them in a airtight mason jar. They can also be stored in an airtight ziploc bag.
How to know when the breadcrumbs go bad?
The breadcrumbs will have a stale old smell when they are bad. If you find mold in the breadcrumbs discard them.
Why do homemade breadcrumbs go bad so fast?
Breadcrumbs made from homemade bread will not last as long because there are no added preservatives that would be in store bought bread or breadcrumbs.
Can I season the breadcrumbs?
Yes! You can either season the whole batch by adding seasoning (Italian seasoning, salt and pepper, garlic powder, or onion powder are a few good seasoning options) right to the bowl of the food processor when making them. You can also add seasoning to the breadcrumbs whenever you’re about to use them.
Why won’t my crumbs get smaller?
If your bread is not dry enough it will not crumb as easily, to get it more dry you can return it to the oven for 10 minutes to remove more moister. You can also sift the breadcrumbs through a pasta strainer which will remove the smaller bits and then put the bigger chunks through the food processor again.
